FHWA Innovation Exchange: Ice Roads

Posted: 6/20/2023

WEBINAR: June 22, 2023, 12:00PM - 1:30PM PT [CLOSED]

As part of this month's "Innovation Exchange" the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is hosting a free 90-minute webinar on the safe and efficient design, construction, maintenance, and operation of an ice road.

The Arctic Infrastructure Development Center (AIDC), with support from FHWA's Federal Lands Highway Division, recently completed a manual on the Design & Operation of Ice Roads that will be the focus of this webinar.

Specific takeaways will include the bearing capacity of ice and how to measure it, hazards that can impact the integrity of an ice road, ice road construction, monitoring and maintenance activities, and vehicle control.

Webinar presenters include:

  • Billy Connor, AIDC & Alaska TTAP Director
  • Amit Armstrong, FHWA Federal Lands Highway Division Project Manager

To participate, no registration required. Just access the webinar using this link or Zoom meeting ID & passcode (Meeting ID: 161 231 2604 Passcode: 888600).

For questions, contact Morgan Malley, TTAP Manager with FHWA's Local Aid Support team.

Arctic Infrastructure Development Center

AIDC is working to improve the quality of life for those who call the Arctic home.

Failures related to structural foundations, water distribution, wastewater collection, and electrical utility connections, as well as challenges with roads, trails, and airports, are common in the Arctic.

However, these issues can often be addressed through proper engineering and awareness wherever structures interact with the permafrost.

AIDC offers a host of tools and expertise aimed at achieving these solutions in Alaska and across the Arctic.

Why Build Ice Roads?

Ice roads are temporary roadways built on frozen bodies of water (lakes or rivers) during winter months when the ice is thick enough to support vehicles.

They are key to connecting remote communities by facilitating transportation in regions with harsh climates.

Proper planning & engineering ensure an ice road can bear vehicular without compromising ice integrity. Regular monitoring & maintenance can identify hazards early allowing for timely repairs.
