Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
WEBINAR: April 25, 2023, 10:00AM - 12:00PM PT [CLOSED]
FHWA’s Bridge Load Rating Webinar Series is designed to provide awareness and share state-of-practice, lessons learned, research advancements, and available resources.
The April 25th webinar presents work done under the FHWA ID/IQ task order on Advancing Bridge Load Rating: State of Practice & Frameworks and provides an introduction to the digital twin technology with potential application in bridge engineering. A Q&A session will follow.
Presenters include:
Jonathan Buck, P.E. (FHWA), Welcome/Moderator
Brent Phares, Ph.D., P.E. (Iowa State University), Advancing Bridge Load Rating: State of Practice and Frameworks
Devin Harris, Ph.D. (University of Virginia), Digital Twin Technology with Potential Application in Bridge Engineering
Target audience:
Bridge & structure engineers from state/local transportation agencies, FHWA Division Bridge Engineers, and consultants who want to acquire fundamental knowledge of bridge load rating, posting, and overweight load permitting.

Bridge load rating is the measure of a bridge’s ability to carry a given live load expressed by a simple factor called the Rating Factor (RF), or referred to as Tonnage for Legal and Permit load rating.
Basically, this is the assessment of bridges in their current condition to carry live loads.
Load Rating can be performed on existing bridges if it is subjected to changes in live load, a physical condition such as loss of section due to damage, corrosion, etc., and if there are changes in the code provisions or laws.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
