Traffic Noise & Abatement

Posted: 7/16/2024

TRAINING: August 21, 2024, 9:00AM - 11:00AM PT [CLOSED]

Join us this August 21st as Dr. Hamid Rahai presents "Traffic Noise & Abatement", a 2-hour online course covering the sources, properties, and abatement strategies for traffic and roadway construction noise.

Traffic noise can have a significant impact on the health of travelers, local residents, and area wildlife. Federal and state guidelines provide methods for measuring and mitigating traffic and construction noise.

This workshop takes a look at common sources of roadway noise, how it's measured, which areas are impacted, common mitigation approaches, and best practice applications.

Course Topics

  • Noise Propagation & Measurement
  • Transportation Noise & Human Health
  • Traffic & Construction Noise Sources & Impacts
  • Federal/State Regulations & Abatement Requirements
  • Sound Barrier Design & Impact
  • Pavement & Sound
  • Noice Abatement Case Studies

This Course is Ideal For

  • Agencies planning/implementing roadway modifications or new deployments
  • Industry professionals who secure, plan, or implement road construction projects
  • Engineering students interested in learning about traffic noise sources & impacts

This course is fourth in a series of SETA modules designed to help transportation & construction engineers, planners, and project managers identify and reduce the environmental impacts of construction projects and roadway development.

Highway Traffic Noise

Highway noise can be pervasive and constant and impact quality of life for neighboring communities.

FHWA is working to minimize the impact of highways on noise-sensitive areas through regulation, policy & guidance, training, and information-sharing.

Its Procedures for Abatement of Highway Traffic & Construction Noise requires state DOTs to analyze noise impacts and consider mitigation approaches.

Dr. Hamid Rahai is founding director of the Center for Energy & Environmental Research & Services (CEERS) and a professor at CSULB’s Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and Biomedical Engineering departments.

Sustainable Engineering

The Sustainable Engineering Training Academy (SETA) provides transportation & construction engineering communities with module-based training in the areas of green buildings, environmental impacts of construction, and structural health monitoring systems.

Taught by industry & academic experts, SETA students gain practical knowledge in specific industry demand areas for career enhancement and improvement.
