Cutting Carbon from Transportation: Best Practices

Posted: 1/5/2024

WEBINAR: January 5, 2024, 9:30AM - 11:00AM PT [CLOSED]

USDOT is hosting a free 90-minute webinar that offers state DOTs and other agencies an overview of best practices on how to cut carbon emissions from transportation.

USDOT Deputy Assistant Secretary Ann Shikany and FHWA Administrator Shailen Bhatt will share the latest policies on transportation greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while state and MPO leaders will showcase their successful emission reduction strategies.

In addition, presenters will talk about recent developments that show progress in cutting GHG emissions from the transportation sector:

  • US National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization: USDOT teamed up with its partners to unveil a roadmap for slashing transportation GHG emissions to near zero.

  • Bipartisan Infrastructure Law: Provides unprecedented investments in clean transportation solutions like public transit, rail, electric vehicle charging, and more.

  • GHG Performance Measure: A new USDOT regulation adds CO2 emissions tracking to national performance metrics. States and MPOs will set their own targets for reducing GHG emissions, track progress, and incorporate the measure into the performance-based planning process for determining how to invest federal funds.

  • State & MPO Leadership: Several states and MPOs have been leaders in analyzing and reducing transportation GHG emissions and have successful experiences to share.

A National Blueprint

Developed by the DOE, DOT, HUD, and EPA, the Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization is a landmark U.S. strategy for cutting all GHG emissions from the transportation sector by 2050.

Providing a comprehensive, system-level perspective of the entire transportation system across all passenger and freight modalities and fuels, this "blueprint" lays out three key strategies to achieving decarbonization:

  1. Increase convenience
  2. Improve efficiency
  3. Transition to clean options
