Preparing for Discretionary Grant Opportunities

Posted: 12/1/2023

WEBINAR: December 5, 2023, 12:00PM - 1:30PM PT [CLOSED]

USDOT is hosting a free 90-minute webinar to spotlight several new resources that can help grantees develop more successful applications for discretionary grant programs.

Navigating federal grant processes can be challenging, especially for those who may not be familiar with some of the technical elements required for transportation projects.

During this webinar, staff from the Office of the Secretary for Policy will talk about a newly developed Benefit-Cost Analysis (BCA) tool that helps identify, quantify, and compare expected benefits and costs of investment, action, or policy. Many discretionary grant programs require a BCA for projects seeking federal funding, particularly those involving construction projects.

Staff from USDOT’s ROUTES initiative will also share the newly updated Rural Grant Application Toolkit designed specifically to help rural, tribal, and other small communities seeking to navigate the growing menu of federal transportation grant programs and develop competitive applications.

The webinar will also share newly announced Safe Streets & Roadways for All (SS4A) grant awards along with tips on how to include safety elements in grant applications.

The ROUTES Program

Rural Opportunities to Use Transportation for Economic Success (ROUTES) is an initiative to address disparities in rural transportation infrastructure by developing user-friendly tools and information, aggregating DOT resources, and providing technical assistance.

The ROUTES initiative aims to ensure rural transportation infrastructure’s unique challenges are considered in order to meet priority transportation goals of safety, mobility, and economic competitiveness.

Safe Streets & Roads for All

Established under BIL, the SS4A grant program allocates $5B in discretionary project funding across five years.

SS4A grants support regional, local, and tribal initiatives that prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries as part of Secretary Buttigieg's National Roadway Safety Strategy goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on U.S. roadways.
