Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
FHWA has released the first-ever rolling NOFO for the Large Bridge Project portion of the Bridge Investment Program (BIP) for up to $9.62B in fiscal years 2023 through 2026.
Large Bridge Project Grants are available for bridges with total eligible project costs over $100M, with a minimum award of no less than $50M and a maximum award of 50% of the total eligible project cost.
BIP is a competitive, discretionary program under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) that focuses on existing bridges to reduce the overall number of bridges in poor condition, or in fair condition at risk of falling into poor condition.
In addition to the NOFO, FHWA is providing a new Benefit-Cost Analysis Tool and an updated Large Bridge Project Application Template to help prepare your application.
While the Fiscal Year 2022 round of the BIP covered three categories of grants, including Planning Project Grants and Bridge Project Grants (those with total eligible project costs of $100M or less), this NOFO is only for Large Bridge Project Grants. FHWA will issue a separate NOFO for the other two categories of BIP grants.
Applications for Large Bridge Project Grants are accepted via Grants.gov
through November 27, 2023 for Fiscal Years 2023 and 2024 funding
Large Bridge Project Grants are available for bridge replacement, rehabilitation, preservation, and protection projects with total eligible costs > $100M.
Regular Bridge Project Grants are available for bridge replacement, rehabilitation, preservation, and protection projects, where the total eligible cost is $100M or less.
Planning Grants are available for projects in early phases of development, where eligible activities include planning, feasibility analysis, and revenue forecasting.
The goal of these grants is to provide BIP assistance for the development of a project that would subsequently be eligible to apply for a Large Bridge Project or a Bridge Project grants.
