This 4-hour live-online course provides an overview of how public health approaches can be drawn upon to design and implement programs to change behaviors among populations. This will include key distinctions between individual and population-level behavior change models, the role public health policy and built environment changes can enhance traffic safety; and example applications of public health behavior change models to traffic safety in the U.S.

This course is part of the Road Safety Champion Program (RSCP), a nationally recognized “Roadway Safety 101” certification training for professionals in transportation, public health, and first responder agencies who support roadway safety but are not safety specialists.

RSCP includes seven core modules plus career-focused pathways in Maintenance & Construction, Planning & Engineering, Public Health, and First Responder. By completing all seven core modules and one complete pathway, participants become eligible to receive their Road Safety Champion Certificate. "Public Health Approaches to Population-Level Behavior Change" is the final of six modules for the RSCP Public Health pathway. Complete all seven core modules plus one full pathway to receive your Road Safety Champion Certificate.

  Sam Pinzl, MPH, CHES

  Samantha Pinzl is a Research Scientist at the Center for Health and Safety Culture (CHSC) and a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). Samantha earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Public Health from the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse. Samantha has a passion for local community prevention work. In her role at the Center, Samantha supports grant activities, leads in outreach & education efforts, and trains communities and organizations in the Positive Culture Framework.

  Samantha has over five years of experience working for a county health department as a public health educator where she facilitated various community coalitions working to prevent adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and promote healthy eating and active living. She also has experience in tobacco prevention and control programming. Samantha has led community prevention efforts to increase walkability and pedestrian safety.
