AI & Big Data in Regional Planning

Posted: 6/18/2026

The newly released white paper Practical Applications of AI & Big Data for Metropolitan Planning Organizations explores how emerging technologies are transforming regional planning.

As digital tools become increasingly central to planning practice, AI and big data can help to analyze complex datasets, forecast trends, and strengthen public engagement. Published by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), this white paper highlights how these tools are already being applied in areas such as:

  • Transportation Planning
  • Geospatial Analysis
  • Digital Twins and Simulation
  • Smart Governance and Public Engagement

The paper also outlines strategies for effective adoption, including clear goal setting, investment in digital infrastructure, staff training, and integrating ethics and transparency throughout implementation.

AI and big data are powerful additions to planning toolkits. By approaching these tools thoughtfully, metropolitan planning organizations can create smarter, more responsive, and more resilient communities.
