FMCSA Offers $217M for Trucking & Bus Safety Needs

Posted: 5/29/2026

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced the availability of $217M in grant funding to improve safety in the U.S. trucking and bus industries.

Funding is available for 4 different programs:

  • The Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Grant Program supports projects that target unsafe driving in areas identified as high-risk crash corridors, promote the safe and secure movement of hazardous materials, improve the safe transportation of goods and passengers in foreign commerce, demonstrate new safety technologies, support participation in the Performance Registration Information Systems Management (PRISM) program, support safety data improvement projects, and increase public awareness and education on CMV safety.

  • The Innovative Technology Development (ITD) Grant Program supports the enhancement and deployment of technology systems to help connect federal motor carrier safety systems with state CMV systems.

  • The Commercial Driver’s License Program Implementation (CDLPI) Grant Program supports states working to improve their national CDL program performance, modernize their systems, strengthen compliance with federal requirements, and enhance the integrity of the licensing process.

  • The Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) Grant Program supports industry partners that provide CMV operator training to current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as other qualified individuals seeking careers in the trucking and transportation industries.

“These grants reflect FMCSA’s commitment to advancing safety while supporting the continued growth of the commercial motor vehicle industry” said FMCSA administrator Derek Barrs. “By partnering with states, training providers, law enforcement, and nonprofit organizations, we are helping build a stronger transportation workforce, improving safety outcomes, [and] moving freight more safely and efficiently across the country.”
