Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
Effective January 18, 2026, Caltrans issued its California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices 2026 (CA MUTCD) to provide uniform standards and specifications for all official traffic control devices in California.
CA MUTCD 2026 replaces CA MUTCD 2014 Revision 9 to meet substantial conformance with the Federal Highway Administration's 2023 Edition of its national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. This action was taken pursuant to the provisions of California Vehicle Code Section 21400 and the recommendations of the California Traffic Control Devices Committee (CTCDC).
The CA MUTCD is the official state standard for the design, installation, and maintenance of all traffic control devices, including road signs, signals, and pavement markings, on California streets and highways. It ensures a uniform and predictable environment for all road users, including motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and persons with disabilities.
The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices specifies standards for how traffic signs, signals, and road markings are designed, installed, and used.
MUTCD is used by state/local agencies and private construction firms to ensure traffic control devices comply with national standards.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
