Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
WEBINAR: April 7, 2026, 7:00AM - 8:00AM PT [CLOSED]
Ohio LTAP presents "Dredging Materials & Use Results," a research results webinar examining the potential beneficial use of dredged material from Ohio’s waterways within transportation-related project activities through ODOT and local public agencies.
Dredging refers to the act of removing sediment from the bed of a river, lake, or harbor. As currents in rivers, lakes, and harbors create build-ups of sediment, dredging is primarily done to ensure the safe and efficient navigation of vessels that require more than the natural or current depth of the waterbody to travel. Once the sediment is extracted, it is then required to be managed, either through beneficial use, storage, or disposal.
Transportation projects utilize a wide variety of soil construction materials, such as soil for fill and embankments, roadway or bicycle facility base materials, and topsoil for seeding and vegetation management. Transportation projects may also require environmental mitigation activities that use soil materials. The main objective of this research was to examine the potential use of dredged materials for transportation project activities conducted by ODOT and/or local public agencies.
