ROUTES Request for Information

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) seeks public input on unmet transportation infrastructure needs in rural communities as part of its Rural Opportunities to Use Transportation for Economic Success (ROUTES) initiative.

Specifically, the ROUTES team requests your feedback on the barriers rural communities face and the opportunities for ROUTES to improve its services and technical assistance to support rural stakeholders and American families.

Topics Requesting Input:

  • Infrastructure condition: bridge closures, aging equipment, & weather resiliency
  • Public transportation availability & freight transportation usage
  • Safety: roadway departures, rail crossings, & non-motorized road users
  • Technology gaps: broadband, cellular coverage, & automated vehicles
  • Barriers to funding & grant challenges for rural transportation projects
  • Multimodal transportation's role in rural economic competitiveness
  • Engagement with federal, tribal, state, & regional entities

The ROUTES Program

Rural Opportunities to Use Transportation for Economic Success (ROUTES) is an initiative to address disparities in rural transportation infrastructure by developing user-friendly tools and information, aggregating DOT resources, and providing technical assistance.

The ROUTES initiative aims to ensure rural transportation infrastructure’s unique challenges are considered in order to meet priority transportation goals of safety, mobility, and economic competitiveness.
