Blowing Snow Mitigation Strategies

Posted: 2/24/2026

WEBINAR: February 25, 2026, 10:00AM - 11:30AM PT

The National Center for Rural Road Safety (NCRRS) and National LTAP (NLTAPA) Safety Work Group are co-hosting a free 90-minute webinar on Blowing Snow Mitigation Strategies: Prioritization, & Implementation, addressing challenging conditions that requires diligence in rural areas where road closures can cut off access to critical services.

This webinar features the South Dakota Department of Transportation's (SDDOT) recent research project identifying blowing snow mitigation strategies, critical locations, prioritization methods, and implementation guidance. The results are transferable to other rural, winter states facing similar challenges and provide practical tools for agencies managing seasonal road closures and safety concerns.

The presentation covers SDDOT's motivation to undertake the project and reduce crashes in rural areas due to blowing snow, the needs, barriers, and innovative practices identified by field staff in South Dakota, an overview of the research methodology, detailed discussion of the guidance including a lifecycle cost framework, and how SDDOT will implement this countermeasure framework in the future.

For transportation professionals, maintenance supervisors, and rural road managers in winter climate regions, this webinar offers valuable insights into cost-effective strategies that improve safety and maintain access during severe winter weather events.
