Active Transportation Planning & Design

Posted: 2/24/2026

The Active Transportation Resource Center (ATRC) at UC Davis offers the free, self-paced online course Introduction to Active Transportation Planning & Design to assist planners, engineers, public health practitioners, community-based organizations, and other champions with limited experience in the field.

This course provides the same material as the in-person version.

The on-demand course explores essential tools used to assess and evaluate the suitability of transportation infrastructure for all types of bicyclists and pedestrians. Participants learn about California's commitment to support all modes of transportation and receive an overview of basic pedestrian and bicycle planning and design standards, guidance, and tools that inform safe, accessible active transportation networks.

Featuring recorded presentations by Susan Handy, Kari Watkins, Dillon Fitch-Polse, and Michelle Lieberman from UC Davis, the course includes interactive exercises and quizzes to reinforce learning.

The curriculum takes about 5.5 hours to complete, upon which participants can earn 5.5 AICP CM credits, making it valuable for professionals seeking continuing education.
