2026 SCAG Student Showcase

Posted: 2/24/2026

The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) invites students to participate in the 2026 Student Showcase, a unique competition challenging participants to create posters and StoryMaps that illustrate the power of open data to tell compelling stories, provide insights, and showcase innovative plans and projects.

This competition offers students an unparalleled opportunity to demonstrate their expertise to a large, influential network of skilled practitioners and future colleagues.

Finalists will receive benefits like complimentary registration, hotel accommodation, and admission to SCAG's 2026 Regional Conference & General Assembly in Palm Desert on May 7-8, 2026. At this premier event, students will present their work to over 900 elected officials and industry leaders from across Southern California, gaining invaluable exposure and networking opportunities with regional decision-makers. A distinguished panel of judges will select one poster and one StoryMap for the "Best in Show" award.

Conference attendees will also vote for their favorites to receive an "Audience Award" in each category. All four awards carry a $1,500 prize and will be announced at the conference's conclusion, recognizing excellence in data visualization, storytelling, and innovative planning approaches.

Who is SCAG?

The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is an association of local governments and agencies that convene to address regional issues.

SCAG develops long-range regional transportation plans that include sustainable communities strategy and growth forecasts, regional transportation improvement programs, housing needs allocations, and a portion of the South Coast Air Quality Management Plan.

What are StoryMaps?

StoryMaps are an Esri web-based platform that combine interactive maps, multimedia content, and narrative text to create data-driven stories. The tool visualizes geographic data in an engaging, accessible format without requiring coding experience.

StoryMaps are invaluable planning and transportation applications, allowing users to layer data sources, incorporate visuals, and communicate spatial insights effectively to diverse audiences.
