National Public Works Week

Posted: 2/16/2026

SPECIAL EVENT: May 17, 2026 - May 23, 2026 , 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM PT

Coming up in May, the American Public Works Association (APWA) presents their annual National Public Works Week (NPWW) celebration honoring the professionals who keep our communities running.

This year's theme, "Rooted in Service, Powered by Community," acknowledges that the roots of service run deep in public works—propelling innovations that help communities evolve into places where people can lead lives of purpose and possibility.

Public works encompasses both highly visible projects like building roads and bridges and essential work that often goes unseen, like maintaining water and sewer systems. Together, these efforts form the foundation of thriving communities, reminding us that every project, seen or unseen, powers the connection between service and the people it supports. From infrastructure planning to emergency response, public works professionals work at the heart of local communities to improve the quality of life.

Since 1960, APWA has sponsored NPWW during the third week of May. What began as a single week of recognition has ballooned in reach and impact across the decades. The number of participating municipalities continues to grow, which means the number of citizens educated on the importance and nature of public works grows. Today, APWA's more than 30,000 members across the US and Canada use this week to raise awareness about the critical role public works plays in daily life.
