Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
TRAINING: March 23, 2026 - March 25, 2026 , 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM PT
Highway bridge failures from stream instability, scour, and erosion pose significant risks to infrastructure and public safety. A comprehensive 3-day course on "Bridge Scour & Stream Instability Countermeasures" offers engineers and inspectors essential training to identify, analyze, and address these critical challenges using proven Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance.
Based on Hydraulic Engineering Circular (HEC)-23, this intensive training equips participants with practical skills to select and design appropriate countermeasures for stream-related bridge problems. The course explores both conventional and alternative strategies to protect bridge infrastructure from hydraulic forces and streambed changes.
Through ten hands-on design workshops, participants will apply hydraulics analysis techniques to real-world scenarios. Topics include streambank revetment design, pier and abutment scour protection, and filter design using 2D hydraulic data. The course also covers scour monitoring programs and developing comprehensive plans for scour critical bridges.
This course is designed for all highway agency hydraulic, structural, and geotechnical engineers, bridge inspectors, and consulting engineers responsible for maintaining bridge integrity against hydraulic-related problems.
Key Learning Outcomes:
How to Enroll:
Hydraulic Engineering Circular (HEC)-23 provides guidance on the design of bridge foundations to address stream instability and scour. It is a key resource to evaluate hydraulic forces affecting the safety and performance of bridges.
HEC-23 supports engineers and transportation agencies in assessing scour risks and applying countermeasures. Its guidance helps improve bridge resilience, reduce failure risks, and enhance long-term infrastructure safety.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
— Robert Brady
California LTAP supports local public transportation agencies across the state by providing professional training, technical assistance, knowledge transfer, and worksite best practices and innovations that help them plan, manage, and maintain their roadway infrastructure.
