Nighttime Visibility for Safety Webinar

Posted: 4/25/2023

WEBINAR: May 18, 2023, 12:00PM - 1:30PM PT [CLOSED]

Nighttime adds another dimension to intersection, roadway departure, and vulnerable road user safety. While more accidents happen during daytime, the fatality rate on the nation’s roadways at nighttime is three times higher than the daytime rate, and 76 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur at night.

Urban areas usually have streetlights near schools, parks, transit stops, sports complexes, and the like to help illuminate pedestrians, but what are other effective safety countermeasures, including for rural areas? Streetlights, although highly effective, can come at a price.

That's why FHWA is hosting an Innovation Exchange Webinar to discuss options for increasing nighttime safety, including intentionally dark areas. The focus is to explore countermeasures that improve nighttime visibility to safely connect people to the community and essential services.

There's no registration required, just join the webinar at ZoomGov (Meeting ID 161 162 7430, Passcode 889904) on 18 May, 2023.
