Back to Basics: Leading Pedestrian Intervals

Posted: 10/27/2025

WEBINAR: November 3, 2025, 11:00AM - 12:30PM PT

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) is hosting a webinar to focus on the benefits and best practices of implementing Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) to improve pedestrian safety and visibility at signalized intersections.

LPIs are traffic signal timing changes that give pedestrians a 3- to 7-second head start to enter a crosswalk before vehicles are given a green light. This improves pedestrian safety by making them more visible to turning vehicles and reinforcing their right-of-way, especially during moments when a light turns green.

This webinar will share jurisdiction examples and strategies for successfully implementing LPIs, plus participants will gain practical insights into when and how to incorporate LPIs into traffic signal operations.

Webinar Topics:

  • Purpose & safety benefits of LPI
  • Criteria & conditions for implementing LPI
  • Identifying LPI phases within signal timing diagrams

Presenters:

  • Ben Hogan, EIT, Public Works Engineer | City of Lancaster
  • Milad Tahmasebi, Engineering Associates | Kittelson & Associates
  • Asawari Gharat, Senior Engineering Associate | Kittelson & Associates (Moderator)
