Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional

Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund

Posted: 10/6/2025

FHWA has issued an amended Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the 2025 Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund (TTPSF) and is accepting applications until the deadline on January 15, 2026.

Available funding is up to $25M, with the average award $450,000. Eligible projects include: safety plans and updates, safety data improvement and analysis including systemic safety studies and road safety audits, roadway departure countermeasures (signing, markings, rumble strips, hazard mitigation), and infrastructure safety improvements (roundabouts, pedestrian/bike separation, flattened slopes, skid-resistant surfaces, curve reconstruction, improved sight distance). Multiple applications are allowable via separate submissions.

Transportation fatalities and injuries severely impact the quality of tribal life. Each year under the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (IIJA) 4% of the available Tribal Transportation Program funds are set aside to address transportation safety issues identified by federally recognized Indian tribes through a competitive, discretionary program. Projects are chosen whose outcomes will reduce fatal and serious injuries in transportation related incidents, such as motor vehicle crashes.

Eligible Projects Include:

  • Develop & update transportation safety plans
  • Safety data assessment, improvement, & analysis
  • Systemic roadway departure countermeasures
  • Infrastructure improvements, other listed activities (23 U.S.C. 148(a)(4))

Applications must be submitted to TTPSF@dot.gov by January 15, 2025.
A
webinar reviewing the funding opportunity will be held on October 22, 2025.

About the IIJA

The Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (IIJA), aka the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), was signed into law in 2021.

IIJA authorized $1.2T in infrastructure spending, primarily aimed at improving America's roads, bridges, transit, and water systems, with an added emphasis on clean energy, climate resilience, and broadband internet.
