Rural Intersection Lighting & Innovative Policy Applications

Posted: 10/3/2025

WEBINAR: October 16, 2025, 10:00AM - 11:00AM PT

FHWA is hosting a free webinar on rural Intersection lighting and innovative policy applications as part of its Every Day Counts (EDC) Nighttime Visibility for Safety Initiative.

The nighttime fatality rate on the nation’s roadways is 3x higher than the daytime rate. Roadway lighting is a crucial element to improving conspicuity of the roadway during night conditions. Join this webinar to hear the Minnesota DOT (MnDOT) and Caltrans share key statewide insights from a policy, implementation, and maintenance perspective on lighting.

Learn how MnDOT have identified rural intersections using risk assessments and surrogate safety measures. These efforts helped prioritize locations that often have few crashes, but which systemically result in large numbers of fatal and serious injury crashes. MnDOT will also share how they implement low-cost, high benefit treatments such as lighting at numerous locations that would typically not qualify under more traditional methods.

In addition, Caltrans will present on statewide policy updates for lighting related to intersections and roundabouts. Information will include agency best practices and highlight innovative examples around the State.

Presenters:

  • Derek Leuer, P.E., State Traffic Safety Engineer, MnDOT
  • Sue Zarling, State Signal and Lighting Engineer, MnDOT
  • Bhanupriya Sharma, P.E., Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer, Caltrans
