Road Departure Crashes & Safety Countermeasures

Posted: 7/30/2025

WEBINAR: July 31, 2025, 9:00AM - 10:00AM PT [CLOSED]

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is hosting a free 1-hour webinar to explore safety countermeasures against road departure crashes as part of its Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) initiative.

Road departure crashes—where a vehicle crosses an edge line, centerline, or otherwise leaves its travel lane—remain a leading cause of fatalities and serious injuries. In Minnesota, 70% of these fatal and serious injuries occur on rural two-lane roads that represent a significant portion of the state's local road network.

This webinar will discuss crash data as well as spotlight proven infrastructure-based countermeasures that help reduce both the likelihood and severity of these crashes, and will address and correct some common misconceptions.

Topics Include:

  • Rumble Strips
  • Enhanced Signage
  • Clear Zones
  • High-Friction Surface Treatments
  • Addressing Common Misconceptions

Expected Takeaways:

  • A better understanding of road departure crash trends and contributing factors
  • Practical, cost-effective countermeasures that can be applied locally
  • Contacts and resources to help plan and implement safety improvements
  • Real-world project examples from Minnesota

Toward Zero Deaths

Minnesota's Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) initiative is the state’s cornerstone traffic safety program that employs an interdisciplinary approach to reducing traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths on Minnesota roads.

TZD is a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies and stakeholders, including the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, MnDOT, and FHWA, that focuses on creating a culture where traffic fatalities and serious injuries are no longer acceptable.
