Bridge Preservation Using Non-Destructive Testing

Posted: 7/11/2025

WEBINAR: July 24, 2025, 9:00AM - 10:30AM PT

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is hosting a 90-minute webinar titled Bridge Preservation Using Non-Destructive Testing on T1 Steel.

Following 2021 FHWA guidance on non-destructive testing (NDT) of fracture-critical members fabricated with Grade 100 steel, bridge inspectors need updated strategies to effectively assess and preserve these structures. This webinar will feature case studies demonstrating how non-destructive evaluation (NDE) results can inform bridge preservation decision-making.

Attendees will learn about project procurement, scoping, work progression, key findings, and lessons learned, including critical considerations and challenges encountered throughout the projects.

Webianr Agenda:

  • Kentucky NDT of Grade 100 Steel
  • NDE & Remediation Plans for T-1 Steel Members
  • Use of NDE to Assess, Evaluate, & Validate Welds in T-1 Steel
  • Q&A Session

Learning Objectives:

  • At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to explain how NDE techniques are integrated into the bridge preservation decision-making process, with a focus on structures fabricated with Grade 100 steel.

Complimentary registration is available for employees of TRB sponsors, standing technical committee chairs, involved CRP panel members, tribal government employees, media, congressional staff, & TRB or National Academies staff.

Non-Destructive Testing

ASTM International defines NDT as "The development and application of technical methods to examine materials or components in ways that do not impair future usefulness and serviceability in order to detect, locate, measure, and evaluate discontinuities, defects, and other imperfections; to assess integrity, properties, and composition; and to measure geometrical characteristics."

In highway pavement construction, the benefit of NDT is to assess the quality of highway materials in-place, without disturbing the production and construction process.
