Why Rural Road Safety?
From 2017 to 2021, 43% of the all roadway deaths occured on rural roads despite only 20% of the population living in rural areas.
Local road agencies often do not have the resources needed to adequately address safety problems on the roads they own and operate.
FHWA's Local & Rural Safety Program provides national leadership in identifying, developing, and delivering safety programs and products to agencies, elected officials, governments and other stakeholders to improve safety on local and rural roads.
