Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
On December 19, 2023, FHWA released the long-awaited 11th Edition of the Manual on Uniform on Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 88 years after the original became our national standard. This new edition includes a number of updates to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and all road users.
Updating the MUTCD has been a top USDOT priority as part of the National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS). Now to include a quadrennial update cycle, the MUTCD aims to be more responsive than ever before in promoting the safe and efficient mobility of all road users.
All U.S. states must adopt the 11th Edition national MUTCD—or adopt a state-based version or supplement that demonstrates substantial conformance—as their legal standard for traffic control devices within two years.
The Federal Register notice, which provides detailed discussion of the final dispositions of major changes from the 2009 Edition, can be viewed here.
The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices specifies standards for how traffic signs, signals, and road markings are designed, installed, and used.
MUTCD is used by state/local agencies and private construction firms to ensure traffic control devices comply with national standards.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
