Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
It's been 88 years since the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) became a national standard.
On November 7, 1935, what was once known as the American Standards Association (now the American National Standards Institute, or ANSI) formally adopted the first edition of the MUTCD as a national standard. 88 years and ten editions later, a new version—the MUTCD's eleventh edition—is in final stages of preparation for release this year. Just as our transportation system continues to evolve, the MUTCD continues to reinvent itself to serve the needs of the traveling public while keeping safety and efficiency at its core.
Shaped by your input and reflecting a broad variety of perspectives, the MUTCD 11th Edition will be the most comprehensive yet. And with a more frequent update cycle, is sure to become one of the most responsive technical standards available.

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices specifies standards for how traffic signs, signals, and road markings are designed, installed, and used.
MUTCD is used by state/local agencies and private construction firms to ensure traffic control devices comply with national standards.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
