Crashes vs Cracking: Competing Priorities for Pavement

Posted: 11/3/2026

WEBINAR: November 6, 2026, 7:00AM - 8:30AM PT

This 90-minute webinar explores how agencies can integrate friction and crash data into pavement management decisions to support roadway safety and Vision Zero goals.

Pavement management decisions must balance infrastructure conditions, roadway safety, and limited agency resources. Incorporating friction and crash data into pavement management systems can help agencies consider pavement surface safety alongside traditional measures such as cracking, ride quality, and rutting.

Hosted by the Transportation Research Board (TRB), presenters will discuss the relationship between pavement friction and roadway safety and how friction and crash data can be incorporated into treatment selection and pavement investment decisions.

Attendees will learn approaches for balancing competing pavement conditions and safety priorities within defined agency resources.

Topics Covered:

  • The relationship between pavement friction & roadway safety
  • How friction & safety considerations can be incorporated into pavement management investment decisions

Presenters:

  • Greg Garner, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet
  • Mike Vaughn, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet
  • Bob Neal, Maryland State Highway Administration
  • Andy Mergenmeier, WDM USA (Moderator)

Complimentary registration is available for employees of TRB sponsors, standing technical committee chairs, involved CRP panel members, tribal government employees, media, congressional staff, & TRB or National Academies staff.
