Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
UC Berkeley's Safe Transportation Research & Education Center (SafeTREC) announced the release of its 2026 series of Traffic Safety Facts, which feature traffic safety data and trends at the national and state level on a variety of road safety topics.
This series uses crash data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). FARS provides data on fatal traffic crashes within the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. SWITRS consists of motor vehicle crash data collected and maintained by the California Highway Patrol.
The 12 program areas are a result of the California Highway Safety Plan 2027 – 2029.
The Safe Transportation Research & Education Center (SafeTREC) at UC Berkeley is dedicated to improving transportation safety and preventing crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
Its focus areas include data analysis & tools, technology for road safety, and policy analysis & community outreach.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
