A Unique Trash Collection Innovation

Posted: 10/26/2026

This latest episode of APWA's Public Works Radio features the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore to discuss the city's trashy best friend: Mr Trash Wheel.

Mr Trash Wheel is a social media celebrity, Baltimore landmark, and semiautonomous trash interceptor that helps clean Baltimore Harbor and its surrounding waters.

Similar to a hay baler that compresses hay for handling, Mr Trash Wheel collects and compresses trash and litter that finds its way into the harbor. The infrastructure has grown to four different trash wheels throughout the area and it’s nothing short of innovative, with the capability of gobbling up 500 tons of litter and debris each year.

Now in its 12th year of service, Mr Trash Wheel is a viral sensation that has changed hearts and minds regarding waste management and water quality.

Featured Podcast Guests:

  • Adam Lindquist, Vice President, Waterfront Partnership
  • Chelsea Anspach, Sr Manager of Outreach & Engagement, Waterfront Partnership

Each episode of Public Works Radio dives into a wide range of topics designed to educate and inspire, making public works more visible to everyone—from the general public and elected officials to industry peers and the media.
