Public-Facing Geospatial Tools in Transportation

Posted: 10/19/2026

WEBINAR: October 30, 2026, 10:00AM - 11:30AM PT

This 90-minute webinar explores practices for creating effective, accessible, and visually clear public-facing geospatial tools.

Geospatial dashboards and scoring tools can communicate complex information and support decision making. Strong graphic design, clear data communication, and thoughtful accessibility practices can make these tools more effective for a wide range of users.

Hosted by the Transportation Research Board (TRB), presenters discuss graphic design fundamentals for maps that include color, typography, and visual hierarchy — approaches for communicating performance measures and safety data to non-technical audiences; and considerations for accessibility and usability.

Drawing on NCHRP's Guide for Creating Effective Transportation Visualizations and examples from state and regional agencies, presenters will share practical approaches that agencies can apply when developing and improving their own geospatial tools.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply graphic design principles to improve transportation geospatial products
  • Evaluate strategies for communicating complex data such as composite scores, crash metrics, and condition ratings to non-technical audiences through public-facing tools

Presenters:

  • Jerry Scott, Florida DOT
  • Melissa Abadie, DKS Associates
  • Charles Lattimer, University of Maryland
  • Chris Bardash, Texas DOT (Moderator)

Complimentary registration is available for employees of TRB sponsors, standing technical committee chairs, involved CRP panel members, tribal government employees, media, congressional staff, & TRB or National Academies staff.
