Recording: Preventing Bridge Strikes

Posted: 10/13/2026

FHWA's most recent Talking Freight webinar explored the results of its Global Benchmarking Program on Countermeasures for Preventing Bridge & Tunnel Strikes from Oversized Vehicles: A Review of Best Practices in Ireland, the Netherlands, & United Kingdom. A recording of this webinar is now available (passcode: c&4%!q3x).

Bridge strikes are one of the leading causes of damage to bridges, causing safety concerns and disruption to traffic. This webinar identified and evaluated proven countermeasures, practices, and technologies, provided an understanding of effective mechanisms used to deploy these strategies, identified better data collection and connection frameworks to aid in decision-making, and discussed how to bring this information to the U.S. to advance the state-of-practice.

Also addressed are key changes, emerging trends, and actionable recommendations to support transportation infrastructure owner-operators, state DOTs, and land use planners.

Speakers:

  • Jeffrey Purdy, AICP, PTP, Freight Programs Team Leader, FHWA
  • Agnes Velez, Team Leader, Office of International Programs, FHWA
