Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
On October 6, 2026, the USDOT announced nearly $22M in grant awards to fund 70 projects for 58 tribes in 19 states that are expected to reduce the risk of roadway fatalities and serious injuries in Native American and Alaska Native areas.
The grants, provided by FHWA's Office of Tribal Transportation (OTT) under its Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund (TTPSF), will fund projects designed to improve safety for Native American and Alaska Native populations, which experience higher rates of fatal injuries associated with transportation than the population as a whole.
For the 2026 Fiscal Year, TTPSF requests totaled $122.3M in 187 applications from 110 tribes, more than five times the amount of available funding. TTPSF grant awards will fund 33 safety plan projects, including four tribes developing their first transportation safety plans. To date, over 85% of all tribes have received funding to develop a transportation safety plan.
