Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
A recent study examined how to make micromobility safer through a 50-state policy review, injury and crash-data analysis, and stakeholder engagement with planners, operators, agencies, and advocates.
As e-bikes and e-scooters become more common, regulations, infrastructure, and safety data have struggled to keep pace. The goal of this research, published by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, was to provide general guidance and relevant information to improve safety for micromobility riders, particularly on e-bikes and e-scooters.
The objectives included identifying regulatory and data gaps, quantifying injury patterns, mapping policies across states and gathering stakeholder priorities. This work emphasized the need for regulation alignment among federal, state and local ordinances and establishing data sharing standards to prevent riders’ injuries, expand access and adopt scaled educational programs for the safer operation of micromobility devices.
Findings suggest that while micromobility offers a sustainable alternative to traditional car travel, its safety benefits are currently compromised by outdated infrastructure, fragmented regulatory definitions, and severe data underreporting.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety is a nonprofit organization that conducts scientific research into the causes of traffic crashes and driver behaviors.
It translates these findings into public education resources and data-driven insights to help lawmakers and safety advocates prevent injuries and save lives on the road.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
