Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
WEBINAR: October 28, 2026, 11:00AM - 12:00PM PT
Travel Behavior as a Road Safety Strategy: How Exposure is Influenced by Land Use & Infrastructure examines how exposure to kinetic energy introduced by motor vehicles influences road safety.
The webinar, presented by the Center for Pedestrian & Bicyclist Safety (CPBS), covers a variety of geographies with a specific focus on a recent paper that explored 227 urban areas in 45 US states. The relationship between exposure-based measures—including automobile mode share, vehicle miles travelled (VMT), and commute time—and motor vehicle occupant, pedestrian, and bicyclist fatalities is explored while controlling for other transportation factors.
Findings suggest that improving road safety requires not only reducing crash severity and conflicts but also reducing the underlying exposure to kinetic energy.

The Center for Pedestrian & Bicyclist Safety (CPBS) is a Tier-1 University Transportation Center (UTC) funded by the USDOT.
CPBS conducts high-impact engineering research, trains future transportation professionals, and builds community tools aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities for vulnerable road users.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
