Lighting for Pedestrian Safety

Posted: 10/6/2026

WEBINAR: October 15, 2026, 9:00AM - 10:30AM PT

This 90-minute webinar explores strategies for improving pedestrian safety at night, with a focus on lighting design and implementation.

Pedestrian safety is a particular concern at night, when reduced visibility can make it more difficult for drivers to see people walking and for pedestrians to navigate crossings safely. Improving nighttime pedestrian safety through a Safe System approach involves multiple strategies, including speed management, visibility, and effective lighting design.

Hosted by the Transportation Research Board (TRB), presenters will discuss approaches for increasing visibility at pedestrian crossings and share practical considerations for assessing, designing, and implementing lighting improvements.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify roadway conditions under which pedestrians are most likely to be killed at night
  • Describe strategies for improving visibility of pedestrians in dark conditions
  • Assess design practices for improving lighting at crossings and along corridors

Presenters:

  • Natasha Fatu, Connecticut DOT
  • Rebecca Sanders, Fehr & Peers
  • Ron Van Houten, Western Michigan University
  • Lauren Blackburn, VHB (Moderator)

Complimentary registration is available for employees of TRB sponsors, standing technical committee chairs, involved CRP panel members, tribal government employees, media, congressional staff, & TRB or National Academies staff.
