2024 Environmental Excellence Awards

Posted: 10/3/2023

FHWA has announced the opening of the 2024 Environmental Excellence Awards (EEA) Program, which recognizes outstanding transportation projects, processes, and organizations that incorporate environmental stewardship into the planning and project development processes using Federal Highway Administration funding.

This biennial program was developed by FHWA to honor those partners, projects, and processes that excel in meeting growing transportation needs while protecting and enhancing the environment. Whether working in partnership with states, organizations, businesses, or individuals, FHWA encourages environmental stewardship and increased awareness of the successes that can be achieved by incorporating environmental excellence into everyday work.

Who is Eligible

FHWA accepts nominations for any project, process, group, or individuals involved in a project or process that used FHWA funding to make an outstanding contribution to transportation and the environment. Any organization, agency, group, or individual in the public, private, or non-profit sectors may submit a nomination for the 2024 EEAs.

When are Entries Due

All entries for the 2024 EEAs are due by November 3, 2023.

How to Submit an Entry

All award nominations must be submitted through FHWA's EEA website. To submit, first create an account, log-in, then click “Submit an Application” at the top of the page.

Past EEA Winners

One 2022 EEA winner is the Gleason Beach Roadway Realignment Project in Sonoma County, CA, where coastal erosion threatened the nearby roadway.

Coordinating with partner agencies, Caltrans led a public outreach and engagement program and designed a roadway realignment project that moved a segment of SR1 nearly 400 feet inland.

Not only will the project's new 850-foot-long bridge maintain a safe transportation route for roadway users through 2100, it will also improve plant and wildlife habitat, eliminate a fish migration barrier, and include new accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians to enhance public access to the California coastline.
