NCHRP Guide for Roundabouts

Posted: 9/25/2023

The Transportation Research Board's (TRB) National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) has released their Guide for Roundabouts to provide information and guidance on all aspects of roundabouts.

Roundabout implementation in the U.S. has increased in the last decade, and practitioners have learned lessons in successfully applying roundabouts in various land use and transportation environments and contexts. The information contained in this report will help highway agencies and other organizations address relevant issues when considering the planning and implementation of roundabouts.

The Guide for Roundabouts provides relevant roundabout planning, design, and performance information for a wide audience, including the public, elected officials, agency staff of all levels, consultants, and educators.

Supplemental to this report is NCHRP Web-Only Document Background & Summary of a Guide for Roundabouts which describes the research for and development of the roundabouts research report.

Who is NCHRP?

The National Cooperative Highway Research Program conducts research in problem areas that affect highway planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance in the United States.

Administered under the Transportation Research Board (TRB), the NCHRP is a collaborative effort between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the National Academy of Sciences.

Roundabouts

A roundabout is a circular intersection in which traffic travels counterclockwise (in the United States and other countries that drive on the right side of the roadway) around a central island and entering traffic must yield to circulating traffic.

Roundabouts are designed to control motor vehicle speeds throughout the intersection while reducing conflict points and severity compared with traditional intersection designs.
